West Terschelling August 1978

Terschelling is one of the so called "Wadden" islands. I spent many summer holiday there when I was young. The island has unique flora and fauna.

Kinnum, you can miss it (so short!).

The Stryper Churchyard. Here the English were stopped when they ask an old lady how many troops there were around. She replied: "Only a few are standing, but thousand are lying" (She spoke about the graves).

Formerum with the windmill.

The church of Hoorn.

"Het Wad".

Northsea Beach

Let's start at "Het Groene Strand" in West.

Trough the woods we pass lake "Dodemanskisten" (the remainings of a former sea arm).

Along the sandy footpath to Paal 3.

It's an hour walking!

Finally the beach with a beach lake at Paal 4.

To reach the island yoy have to take the ferry from Harlingen, provence of Friesland. The first you will see is West Terschelling with the Brandaris Lighthouse.

Towards "De Noordsvader". The shooting range is closed now.

Craters from the practice bombs.

Flora and Fauna

Steek kwal (these are dangerous irritating).

Blauwe Kwal (just slimy).

Cranberries, unique for The Netherlands. Due to a stranding the berries came ashore and proved to be in furtile grounds. Terschelling has it's own cranberrie wine industries.

Engels Gras.

Lamsoor. Forbidden to take home!

Lifeboat practice at Paal 8.

The "Zeeduivel" tractor ............

pulling the "Nicolaas Marius" lifeboat to the sea.

Ready for launch.

The islands' seniors are watching you from their bench at "Het Wakend Oog". So, if you want to know the latest gossip ......

Departure

All good things ends ...

The ferry, nowadays they are bigger and also the harbour is rebuild.

The final view on West.

look for this eye.

Some of the characterestic houses.

The oldest house is 't Behouden Huys, one of the few houses not distroyed in the fireblaze of August 20 1666, after the English attacked the island. Nowadays it's a museum.

Two of the canons from the in 1799 sunken goldship Lutine.

Relaxing at sundown.

The rest of TERSCHELLING

We look behind us for this well-known view of West and Dellewal.
