Capri....Island of Paradise!! The southern coast of the island. The water is crytal clear and beautiful!
Capri (prounced Ka-pree, inflection on the Ka)is a beautiful place you must go to when visiting southern Italy. There is much to see and, although accomadations are costly, it's worth staying a night or two. First we took the boat from Napoli and it was pretty crowded. When you arrive at the Marina Grande there will be lots of people and little shops. I recommend gettting out of the area quickly and up to Capri or Anacapri, whichever is your destination. Sure you can purchase some things here, but it's better to wait until you get ready to leave. There are restroom to the right once you exit the boat launches. There is also a little beach off to the right, which is free, but very rocky. It is a nice place for a swim though. From marina Grande you can take a Boat ride to Grotto Azzura. Definitely see the Blue Grotto. You ride to the west around the north side of the island on a small boat, only to transfer over to an even smaller boat for the ride inside the grotto. The water inside literally glows bright blue. If you go in the late afternoon they will let you swim inside. It's customary to tip your boat driver here.
In Capri there are lots of restuarants and shops. The old taxis are convertible and very neat looking.
Take a walk down Via Krupp on the southeast side of the island to enjoy some great views.
We also took the "ski lift" to the top of Mount Solaro and were rewarded with the best views on the island. Pray for clear weather. You can see Mt. Vesuvio in the distance towards Naples. You can also see the amalfi coast from up here.
There are quite a few celebrities that visit the island and don't be surprised to see somebody famous. Of course they are probably staying the $1000 a night room, but that's okay. |
| | A view from the Anacapri side of Marina Grande and the north coastal area. |
The rocky beaches This beach is right by the Marina Grande. There are limited beaches on Capri, so don't get your hopes up. The water is very nice, but the ROCKS! Although there are enough places to put out your towels, and this beach is free, or was in 2000.
| | The lift to Monte Solaro is not for those afraid of heights or being hoisted up a mountain on a cable. Each person sits alone. If you're a photographer, Monte Solaro is a must on Capri. |
Piazzetta Capri This piazzetta is in the town of Capri and is the little heart of the island. Lots of cafes and restaurants here, as well as stores. From here you can branch out in several directions to explore
| | Magical place. Almost seemed like Disneyland. |
Island Orientation The northside of the island is where your boat will arrive. Marina Grande is the main port of entry. The town of Capri is to the east, while Anacapri is to the northwest. The Grotto Azzura is on the northwest side as well. The Faraliogni or "rocks in the sea" are on the southwest side of the island. You can pretty much walk everywhere here, but I recommend taking one of the small buses when going between Capri and Anacapri.
| | View from Monte Solaro. |
Via Krupp A walkway on the southern side of the island leading down to the water. This is a spectacular place for pictures. See how beautiful the water is.
| | Vista from Axel Munthe of the North side. You can see the Marina Grande, the port you arrive to Capri at. There is a small beach next to the port, where you can relax and swim. No charges for the beach. |
The Blue Grotto As you can see in the picture, the entrance to the Grotto Azzura is very small. The boat I took the picture from was a boat to the area. You then boarded one of the tiny row boats to enter the cave. Recommend non slippery shoes for this endeavor. The water can be a little rough sometimes, so BE CAREFUL!
| | The Blue Grotto Inside the Blue grotto. It's one of the highlights of visiting the island. |
Inside the Grotto You are supposed to tip the boat pilot, as he usually will sings songs, as well as drive the boat. |
| | Don't fall down.. Pretty high up on the mountain, but you can still see the bottom of the water. The white dots are boats. |
Capri in Minature Basically this was a waste of money. You can't see it from the outside, so you spend the money to go in. It is cute though, but not worth paying for.
| | White Houses and beautiful views A view from a restaurant on the north side in Capri. Can't remember the name, but they serve great pizza. I had Pizza Frutta di Mare, which means seafood. It was very good, with calamari, scallops, shrimp etc.. |

Beljanewood Mon Sep 29, 2008 01:04 UTC Great page - good helpful stuff. I will be spending one day in Naples in a couple of weeks. | deebum25 Wed Sep 24, 2008 23:28 UTC Jeff, I have to thank you for your invaluable tips the best of which was to go exploring down the back streets. We knew that some of the most amazing food is found at the trattorias and in Napoli they are only found by exploring the back streets. | Kisvirag Sun Sep 21, 2008 18:30 UTC Hi Jeff, Just to clarify, Promod is French clothing line. | ttsui Mon Feb 18, 2008 19:34 UTC We just got back from a 2 week trip to Naples, Amalfi and Rome.
