British Summertime
Poor and in need of a holiday? No better excuse to get the dusty tent out of the mildrewed wardrobe. Follow the great Bank Holiday weekend tradition of finding the roughest place to pitch your tent, torchless, with millions of midges and spiders finding a way inside the confines of your tent. Snoring neighbours, a sleeping bag soaked through by dew, clothes creased and smelling of grass, while mother natures always calls past midnight. The joy of mosquito bites, space-greedy tent-mates, recycled air, and oh yes, that constant aching like a son-of-gun the day after the night before.

There's no beating the great British outdoors.

PACKING THE TENT ON A GLORIOUS SUNNY MORNING

So WHY do I jump at the chance of a weekend away camping? I think the 'away' part of that sentence is bait enough. Looking closely at my bank balance the words tent and camp form in my head. I used to camp quite alot when I was in my mid-teens, then I grew more sophisticated and started to hate the whole idea. Having now grown out of sophistication I just don't care. Some of the most scenic places I have visited in Britain have been spent camping in a field with the best ocean view right outside the zipped door. Camping really is a shared experience - the more people you get in on the act the happier the campers. The joy of collaborative moaning should not be underestimated.

A true appreciation of ones own bed can only be reaped after a weekend under the canvas.
Hannah demonstrates the 'wrap-around-sleeping bag technique' in effort to avoid the wind and rain.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

There are lots and lots of campsites in the UK. I've found the easiest way to find a pitch is by turning up at your choosen destination and asking a local. This method often unearths the best located and quietest sites.

If you do want to book in advance try searching for campsites HERE, or contact the local Tourist Information Office.

ALWAYS book in advance on Bank Holiday Weekends!!
