Visiting Ottawa

by kenHuocj - last update: Sep 10, 2002

where to start

the CAPITAL INFOCENTRE is located south the Parliament Complex across Wellington street, West of Chareau Laurier Hotel and Elgin Street.

At the Info Centre, model of city, get yourself a "Tourist Passport" of visit to NCR,
Be photographed next to the Terry Fox Statue

Terry Fox

galvanized the nation with the sheer will and boundless determination he showed during his cross-country Marathon of Hope in 1980.

Terry had been diagnosed with bone cancer in 1977 at the age of 18, and his right leg was amputated six inches above the knee. He was so moved by the suffering he witnessed while in hospital, he vowed to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

On April 12, 1980, after dipping his artificial foot in the Atlantic Ocean in St. John's, he began his cross-country run. People lined the road to see him. Donations poured in.
For 143 consecutive days, he ran 42 kilometres a day
-- the distance of a marathon.

On Sept. 1, just east of Thunder Bay, Ont., he was forced to stop because the cancer had returned.

5,565 km through six provinces and was two-thirds of the way home.

In June, 1981, Terry Fox died, one month before his 23rd birthday. The Marathon of Hope, has raised more than $250-million in the name of Terry Fox.

The Parliament

To prepare yourself
go to the Parliamentary website,
it's all there
http://www.parl.gc.ca

Parking dilemmas

There is no parking on Parliament Hill; numerous parking lots are located nearby ($). However, there is one handicap parking space located near the Info-Tent (left of the Centre Block, behind the West Block). Tour bus parking is not permitted on Parliament Hill.

But I have a solution for you,
If visitng on Saturday or Sunday
At the World Trade Centre, underground
corner of
Metcalfe street ( runs South to North ) and
Albert street ( runs East to West)

You are in the heart of Confederation Boulevard
where you’ll encounter many works of art
ranging from national monuments to quirky, contemporary sculptures.

and
Until January 28, 2002 - Parliament is not in session. Guided tours of the Centre Block are available. Please allow at least 15 to 20 minutes to be processed through the security check.

On tour, visitors may see

House of Commons chambers

the Library of Parliament

At the end of the Hall of Honour is the Library of Parliament. This show-piece of Gothic Revival architecture features an intricate parquet floor of cherry, oak and walnut. In its panelling of Canadian white pine are carved hundreds of flowers, masks and mythical creatures.

Another Travelogue will be a tour inside the Parliament
Skilled carvers decorated the Parliament buildings with symbolic elements like saucy gargoyles making faces at passers-by, birds and animals that come to life in sculpture, and events from our history that are played out in stone friezes.

so unti; the next travelogue,
I hope you have had a brief glimspe of our Parliament

Good that Ottawa has so many biking routes, and a place to hire a bicycle near the Chateau Laurier Hotel. Also I think I would like the Canadian Canoe Museum, since I used to do a lot of canoeing when I was younger.
