Heaven on Earth

by Shafali - last update: Sep 30, 2002

I am completely obsessed with this country, the people, and the landscape. It is AMAZING. Zagreb was such a pleasant surprise. It is extremely clean (compared to other Eastern European capitals)and I felt so safe and comfortable wandering the streets after 9 pm. Families were out on weeknights hanging out at cafes, eating popcorn, socializing. It was a refreshing, wholesome vibe. Moving onto the coastline.....it cannot be described with words. The men on the Dalmatian coast are known to be irresistable. Overall, this country is beautiful, the people are accomodating, and the highly developed tourist infrustructure makes it all carefree and fun.

I don't know about other people, but I hate train stations. They are the places where the shadiest people hang out in the worst parts of towns. After travelling to 8 other countries before arriving in Zagreb, I was extremly surprised. The station was CLEAN, it was SAFE, and it is right in the city. Most people (especially those under 30) speak and understand English, but it is always nice and respectful to try and communicate in Croatian.

The main bus station is not too far from the train station. We took a bus to Dubrovnik and it took about 14 hours for some reason. But the ride was worth it! Emerald green lakes, abandoned villages where landmines were set off, red roof tops....it is a great way to get to know the country/landscape if you have limited time. Taking the bus back from Dubrovnik to Zagreb actually took much less time.

Using Dubrovnik as a home base is a good idea to take small trips or daytrips to neigboring Bosnia and Montenegro. There are tour buses which will take you. The same is true with Split. It is a good place to make other small excursions to other towns and islands from.
I will add pictures and more as I have time.
