Introduction Hats are a passion of mine. It's not often that I buy one (much too expensive) although I will splash out about once a year. Some of these hats are brand new, some I have bought many years ago. All pictures were made on April 9th 2002. These hats remind me of places, people and travel and that's why I am putting them here. |
Virtual hat I'm not really wearing this hat. One day in November 2004 I saw VT member RobDavis who wore this hat on his member snapshot. So I asked if I could have a hat too. And he made it for me :-) |

Vermeer's hat RobDavis also took inspiration from the famous painter Vermeer, Girl with the Pearl Earring (also made into a film). He used the same photo as the first one in this t'logue! |
Africa This hat I bought in Leiden, the city with the oldest Dutch university, where I used to live. The ostrich feathers gently move with every movement I make so it looks different all the time. It makes me feel like an African queen. I first wore it in Stavanger, Norway. But it was most in place when I wore it in South Africa during a conference. |
Siberia This hat is made of sheep, leather and fur. I bought it in a French Pyrenees village as a souvenir in the midst of a hot summer. It is still one of my favourites and reminds me of the hats that Russians wear. In Romania I saw many similar hats, all very cheap but none as nice as this one! I like to wear this hat around Christmas time, although in The Netherlands there is usually no snow then. |
Staphorst Dutch people will know what the Dutch village of Staphorst stands for. Beautifully painted farms, the women still in traditional dress and life being strictly religious. I bought this black velvet farmer's cap there on a late Saturday afternoon, just before the shop closed. I put this cap on anyday. When I feel like fun or just because I have a bad hair day. |
Indonesia This light summer hat gets many comments. Mostly that it reminds people of Indonesia. Well, I am of Javanese origin. The Dutch designer didn't realise the Indonesian effect, but when she saw me put it on, she exclaimed about it too. |
Mongolia This is a a felt hat with a fake panther fur rim. A few years ago I did some research on Mongolia for a friend who was going to travel there for 3 months. And at the World Expo 2000 in Hanover, I tried on a Mongolian costume. When I saw this hat I knew it had to be mine. Not only for its shape but also because of the colour which is my favourite: orange! |
