Punch coco

Rhum with fruit or coconut milk

Like a movie.

Dinner at the home of president's daughter. The cook had run away just before cooking started so a friend (who called himself Napoleon) took about twice as long to prepare it. It was like being in a strange movie. The long wait (for foie gras, zebu, salad, rice, duck), the mobile phones constantly ringing and extra places set for unexpected friends arriving during dinner. All these friends top government officials, nightclub owners, business people...young and succesful but at a loss when the cook runs away. A really strange experience!

Visit to the president's palace

To continue this strange experience, we were invited to the palace of the president of Madagascar, Didier Ratsiraka. Who, by the way, is in the midst of elections and has 40% of the votes againast 46% of his opponent. Further elections will be held in February 2002.

Grilled langouste

At Cocoteraie, Sainte Marie. Very good!

Malgache hospitality

The cuisine is rice, rice and rice. As well as a mixture of Indonesian, Indian, African, Western influences.
Most often you will find yourself eating zebu (a kind of beef), canard (duck), chicken and (shell)fish. And butternut soup.
But when there is something to celebrate there will be a big spread!

Bottled water

Play safe, bottled water only!

Dessert

You'll find this kind of food in upmarket hotels like Hotel Colbert.

Palm hearts salad

Refreshing and crunchy.

Fish

This is the fish we ate several times. I didn't think it as tasty as I am used to. Note its little teeth!

Whisky

Some things are the same everywhere!
