RHODES Island

Rodos Island at Dodecanese

Rhodes is a outstanding island in the east of the Mediterranean, the largest one of the Dodecanese, an island rich in its beauty and famous for its history.

Four large istorical towns still testify its ancient glory with their ruins: Ialyssos, Camirus, Lindos, Rhodes itself where buildings dating back to the Byzandium and the Middle Ages link that distant age of prosperity in the life of today.

Philosophers, mathematicians, athletes, poets and sculptors, already well known in the age of Homer, lived in this flowery island. Some of the most admirable works of art of that matchless period, one can see even today in the very surroundings of their creation.

Rhodes, owing its name to the rose (Ñüäïí), the sacred flower of Apollo, the god of the sun, aooearw in the tradition aw the nymph of thiw god. Quite flowery under the bright blue sky, still bathed by the same emerald sea, its always looks like a nymph, that ideal island succesfully combining the tradition with beauty and always fascinating with its charms.

Port of Rodos

The capital of Dodecanese, was an important center in the 5th-3rd centuries B.C. It was part of both the Roman and Byzantine empires, before beingconquered bt the Knights of St. John. Fringed by sandy beaches, and with good hiking and lively nightlife, Rhodes attracts thousands of tourists each year. The town of Rhodes has been inhabited for more than 2400 years. A city was first built here in 408 BC, and when the Knights of St. John arrived in 1309 they built their citadel over these ancient remains. The knight medieval citadel, dominated by the towers of the Palace of the Grand Masters, forms the center of the Old Town.
The new town lies beyond the original walls. Of the walls’ eleven gates, Koskinou (ST. John’s) gate, which leads into the Bourg quarter. Has the best view of the cities defences. As one of the finest walled cities in existance, the Old Town is now a World Heritage Site.
