Candlelight Vigil in East Jerusalem
Everyone's first reaction to the murderous attacks on September 11th was of course complete and utter shock. While sitting in my home in East Jerusalem, my brother-in-law, a journalist, called to ask me how Palestinians were reacting. Apparently, he'd already heard reports of people celebrating in the streets. As the images on TV showed, some were celebrating but I can attest to the fact that most Palestinians reacted with the normal human reaction: horror and disbelief. We were all glued to the TV screen that evening.
I took this picture on September 14, 2001 at a solidarity rally for the American victims in front of the American consulate in East Jerusalem (the Palestinian quarter of Jerusalem). The march and vigil was organized by Christian and Muslim Palestinians. It was quite moving, especially when prayers were conducted by a priest followed by an imam (muslim prayer leader). The march was attended by hundreds of foreigners and Palestinians.
Unfortunately, no Israelis attended...too much tension, I suppose. I know Israel had its own vigils.
