Vercors - Le Grand Veymont

by Talloch - last update: Jun 16, 2001

Summiting the Grand Veymont

In june 2001 we went on a little 3-day expedition to climb Le Grand Veymont, the highest mountain in the Vercors. The idea was to climb to the high plateau on the first day and camp near a unmanned shelter. We would go up the mountain on the second day and return to earth on the third day.

(For more pictures and a the diary (in Dutch) see my <a href="http://www.hacom.nl/~nico/hiking.htm">website<a>.)

To the Haut Plateau de Vercors

We started from St.Agnan where we left the car on a empty little campground: N44.94190 E5.43100, 625m

It took some mental efford to put on our raingear and backpacks and start the 1000m climb to the plateau that we couldn't even see through the clouds.

The plateau

After hours and hours through the dark, wet forest things started to change. First the rain stopped because we entered the clouds and when we finally broke through we where on top of the plateau.

We where near the unstaffed cabine at Jasse du Play (N44.90997 E5.50153, 1630m) and in the distance we saw our goal, Le Grand Veymont.

"base camp"

It wasn't raining, but it sure was blowing hard and it got colder and colder. It even started to freeze so hard that the only water source (1 km further) almost froze over.
We spent a windy restless night in the tent and at one point I went out to find large rocks to support the tent. Hard to believe that this was southern France in june.

Going up

The next morning things looked better. The storm had lessened and it was a super clear day. We broke up camp and went on our way to Pas de la Ville (1930m).
We left our heavy backpacks on the col and started to ascent the mountain.

The summit

After about 2 hours from the col we arrived at the summit (2340m). What a view, The Alps, Mont Blanc, Mont Ventoux, Mont Aguille. Worth every drop of sweat.

We descended and stayed another night in our 'base camp' and the next morning we started our descend to St.Agnan. What a blast..
