Just a quick note on a fun, out of the way activity: In Hot Springs, SD, located south of Custer, there is an ongoing archeological dig. Millions of years ago, there was a sinkhole here that trapped dozens of mammoth, saber-tooth tigers, and other prehistoric animals. There is a building built over the site to allow digging all summer long. You can take a guided tour of the site and watch people very carefully digging around the fossils. |
Your kids can take part in a special "excavation" just for them, where they learn to use archeologists' tools and they dig in the sand for fossils. |
Looking up at a full-size replica. |
