Parque das Naçoes (Expo 1998)

by irisbe - last update: Oct 28, 2001

Parque das Naçoes. Here was held the World Expo 98. Most of the attractions are gone and the few that were remaining opened late, or not at all on Mondays... so better go visit it on other days. But we thought we could still walk around and have a look. The sea aquarium, underwater world, was open, but you had to sacrifice to wait at least 2 hours queueing to enter, we didn't. We only had a few days to spend in Lisbon and sure didn't want to spend it here in a queue.
The tall ship was operational in 1962. It was modernized a few times since. It has visited harbours in 45 different countries. It weights 1800 tons and its mast is 45,1 meters high. It houses 9 officers, 17 sergeants and 113 people working on it, makes a total of 139. It has the capacity taking 63 cadetes with it for training.
On the border of Rio Tejo, lay the N.E. "Sagres", a maritime training vessil ship. It is a beauty. Afterwards, checking my pictures, I discovered I haven't taken any picture of the entire boat, only details... but then... the details will feed your imagination and you can dream how the boat really lookes like. More information you can find at: http://www.marinha.pt
Vasco da Gama tower:
From here you can even spot the huge Statue on the other side of the river!
Vasco da Gama tower, you can go up using an elevator and have a panoramic view of the area. If the weather is perfect you can see the airport in the North and the big red bridge over the Rio Tejo near Belém! You can even spot the huge Statue on the other side of the river!
A view from above. In the distance you can spot the Vasco da Gama tower, at the left the premises of the Expo 98.

Parque das Naçoes. Here was held the World Expo 98. Railway station, Gare do Orientes, at the right the Marconi building, that looks like a huge ship coming towards me.

Parque das Naçoes. Here was held the World Expo 98. Public transport: the metro going to the Parque dos Naçoes is worth taking. I wished I could descent the vehicle at every stop. They where all so beautiful and each metro stop had it's own topic. This is one of the walls at the stop of the Gare do Oriente.

First thought is... you really need to know how to handle all those ropes! It was a magnificient view when you looked upwards.
