Here in Cong they made a famous movie with Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne. It was called "The quiet man" and was the story about an Irish boxer who made career in the USA and came back to his home-village in Ireland after 20 years.
He wants to settle and live in piece, but... |
The movie was made long before 1960, but still the whole area lives on the legends and stories about the time, when Cong was used as a scenery for that film. |
This house used to be the PUB in the movie. It never was a pub in reality, but a grocery-store. It is still owned by the same grocer, who never wanted to sell his house or shop, although he got plenty of offers.
You may buy old photographs there of the "glorious times" - and he also had a small part in the film. |
Most of the landscape was done in Hollywood studios, with a few exceptions. |
And all over the landscape you may find signs like this, and plenty of tourists are still interested to see them. |
And a lot of eceneries were also made in the gardens and park of Ashford Castle, still a luxury hotel, and actually the main reason to make the movie in this place - as it was the ONLY luxury hotel in Ireland at that time. |
