Monumento Vittorio Emanuele II

Monumento Vittorio Emanuele II

Also called Vittoriano is at the southside of Piazza Venezia. It was built in remembrance of the union of Italy. They started to build it in 1885. It lasted 40 years to finish it. It is also the grave of the unkown soldier.

Forum Romanum

In the time of the Roman Empire the forum was the center of the city. Nowadays it is a collection of remains of the Empire. Imagine how it looked like more then 2000 years ago. Buy a book from Rome in your own language to see what it looked like. The three pilars belonged to the temple of Castor and Pollux. The pilars in the front of the picture are a part of the temple of Saturn and the building behind it is the temple of Antonio and Faustina.

In the background you see a glimp of the Colosseum

On the picture you see the Arch of Septimus Severus and the pilars in the back belonged to the temple of Castor and Pollux.

Piazza del Popolo

At the end of the Via del Corso you'll find the Piazza del Popolo. The two similar chaped churches are called Santa Maria di Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli. They were developed by Carlo Rainaldi in the 17th century.

Ostia Antica

Ostia Antica

The ancient village of Ostia Antica has become an open air museum. Just outside of Rome. Take a little train to the coastline.
Ostia Antica has all things you would expect to find in a Roman village like this Amphitheatre.

Good advice about 1st of May. I arrived on 30 April and decided to head east to Ancona, and it was much the same there- little open , but at least the buses were running. And I loved Ostia Antica too.
