"BERNINI" Rome Travelogue by morganna

One of my obsessions in Italy is that man...
Well, Im gonna show you the reasons, maybe i'm not that mad, huh?

APOLLO E DAFNE

This is my favourite one. Represents Apollo capturing the nymph Daphne who transforms herself into a tree to escape the god. To understand this statue, one must move around it, from right to left: the metamorphosis will take place before your eyes. Behind Apollo u'll see the god leaning on a tree while Daphne disappears.

"Quisquis amans sequitur fugitivae gaudia forma/Fronda manus implet baccas seu carpit amaras" (Who aims to follow the flying dreams of fun, will find his hands fulì of bitter leaves and berries) - latin words engraved on the marble pedestal

PROSERPINE RAPTURE

Mmmm.. well, maybe this is my other favourite: represents Pluto rapturing Proserpine.

Here the artist tries out new solutions such as the twisting body and the extraordinary realism of certain details.

DAVID

Bernini portrays the young boy as a pagan hero while he is plying the sling to throw the stone against Goliath. Look at the right moment, the maximum tension before the throw.
At the foot of the statue are the armour and the eagle headed harp, which is the Borghese’s escutcheon

According to many critics, David’s face is a self-portrait of the artist .

ANGEL

One of those in St. Angello bridge

SANTA TERESA ECSTASY

Enjoy it in Sta. Maria della Vitoria church, next to Piazza Republica

BEATA LUDOVICA

ENEAS AND ANCHISES

Three generations in one marble block. Inspired by the part of the Aeneid which tells the story of the Trojan warrior who escapes with his father Anchise and little son Ascanio

FONTANA DELLA BARCACCIA

A ship with water inside... isn't it baroque? (Piazza Spagna)

FONTANA DI TREVI

FONTANA DEI FIUMI

Nilus river

VATICANO

Bernini was also an architect. He designed this simple square. He worked a lot in Vaticano. Too much luxury, but if he did it, I can tolerate it ;P

St. Pietro's chair

ST. ALEXANDER VII TOMB
The last but not the less important. Look the ironical work here. Death is the same for everybody, even between all those treasures of Vatican.
