4th of July Fireworks!

by AdHocTravel - last update: Aug 30, 2002

First find a place to stand

Macy's puts on quite an amazing fireworks show over the East River on the 4th of July (seems like Macy's has the corner on most of the big events in NYC!).

The city closes down FDR drive from around 14th Street up to the 40's.

First you have to decide if you want to be out in the open or under the overpass.
The finale (this isn't it) was huge.

A great evening. Not one I think I'd do every year, but a great time!

Reasons to be prepared

We started out under the overpass but were afraid our view would be blocked so we moved out in the open nearer to the end of the closed section.

Then it started to rain!

Not a major down pour mind you, but just enough to make everything wet.

Fortunantely we had three umbrellas for five people so we managed.

Still Waiting!

The show was supposed to start a bit before nine, but was about 40 minutes late.

So we continued to wait

Finally- Boom!

Once they started, they were worth the wait, loud and very pretty, the show lasted a good 25 minutes.

The Blind Tiger has reopened!! It's new digs at 281 Bleeker (@ Jones St) are absolutely gorgeous. An expanded kitchen is turning delicious pressed sandwiches and great coffee. Currently sans liquor license but go eat. Hopefully the beer will be back.
