Restaurant Name: Restaurant L'Ambiance
We had arrived in Nice on the 1st January 2004. It was 7pm, cold and we were starving. We walked around the block by our studio deciding to eat at the first open place. It happened to be L’Ambiance.
L’Ambiance is a typical family-run pizzeria in Nice. The restaurant has simple décor - a bright interior with high ceilings, rough stone walls and large modern oil paintings (for sale). The manager, who also makes the pizzas, is extremely welcoming and very keen to demonstrate his excellent English.
The pizzas are freshly made to order in front of you and then cooked very quickly in a hot oven. They arrive on your plate still bubbling. They are very big but thin so it is an easy job to demolish a whole one by yourself.
The wine is ordered by the quarter in pitchers. I have not ordered wine this way before – all you need to know is that a ‘trois/quatres’ will bring .75 litres of wine (ie a bottle’s worth) in a pottery jug, enough for two (just) This was 9 euros for the House red.
Favorite Dish: The dish of the day is the owner’s wife (I think she is his wife) Bearing in mind this a cold January evening, she is looks a beach babe in a tiny black sundress, low-cut, plenty of bling-bling jewellery and high heels. The fact that she was the other side of 50 did not matter. She is fab. It’s worth going to this place just to see her.
I love pizzas and will nearly always choose a plain cheese and tomato, a marguerite. For a pizza to be perfect for me it must be thin with an almost under-cooked base and the cheese completely melted going right up to the edge. The pizzas here are excellent. Prices for pizza and pasta start at about 7 euros.
The menu is mostly a selection of pizzas, salads and pasta. There is a thriving take-away or ‘emporter’ service too, from a window onto the road. There is no terrace but that is not a problem in the winter and in the summer the restaurant is air-conditioned.
This restaurant is also very handy for eat-in or take-away if you are anywhere near the Port or if you are staying in the nearby budget
