In 1995 the building of Grand Mosque "Symbol of Islam" was started and in March 2001 it was finished. The complex is 1000 metres long and 885 metres wide. There are 4 minarets on the corners and a big central one of 91.5 metres. The was inaugurated by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos in May 2001.
The building is well worth seeing as it has some excellent craftsmanship, beautiful features and the interior of the Mosque is magnificent.
See the stunning 14-meter length Swarovski crystal chandelier in the dome that illuminates the single hand-made Persian carpet consisting of 1,700 million knots.
It is one of the largest hand woven carpets in the world, measuring about 77 x 66 metres, woven in several pieces and assembled on-site, 600 women have worked on it full time for four years. It covers the entire main prayer hall floor.
Upto 20,000 worshippers can be accommodated in the Grand Mosque.
