As I've only spent the night in downtown Chicago once (and that place I can no longer find), I will resort to just listing a couple noteworthy places.
The Drake Hotel (Hilton) is probably the most elegant of all hotels in Chicago, resting near the end of Michigan Ave., where it meets Lakeshore Dr.
The Hotel Inter-continental is another fine hotel that sits right in the middle of Michigan Ave. This probably has the best location!
Hyatt Regency Chicago is the 'largest hotel in Chicago.' It's a couple blocks off Michigan Ave., and thus another great location.
These are only three of hundreds of choices in Chicago. Do some research. Personally, when I spend the night in Chicago, I generally go far outside the city (say up to Gurnee or west to Orland Park) and just take a Metra train in.
Anything downtown Chicago will be very pricey. Places in the suburbs will be much more reasonable.
