THE MENA HOUSE OBEROI
Pyramid's Road. Giza. Cairo. Tel: +20 2 383 3222 Fax: +20 2 383 7777
If you can afford it, this mytical hotel is a real luxury. One of the joys of staying at the Mena House Oberoi is that as may of Egypt's magnificent treasures are but a stone's throw away. The Sphinx is literally on the other side of the golf course, and the site of the Step Pyramid of Zoser and the legendary Tomb of Ti only a little further.
In its 40 acres of jasmine scented gardens with the Great Pyramid towering above, the Mena House has seen enchanting distinguished guests ever since it opened in 1869. There's even an old story the staff love to tell about a guest who asked where the Pharaohs stayed when they were building their Pyramids. 'At the Mena House of course, where else?' was the happy reply. Beautiful and arabesque furniture inlaid with mother of pearl, hand-crafted mosaic tiles, exquisitely carved brass-bound wood doors, original works of art and magnificent antiques all speak of a degree of care and attention to detail rarely found in a modern hotel. Though barely 20 minutes by car from the center of Cairo, the Mena House Oberoi is a positive oasis of quiet good taste, luxurious living and delightfully attentive staff.
