Unless you want to tramp the damp streets near Dumfries Academy - alma mater of J.M. Barrie, creator of Peter Pan - in search of a sombre B&B establishment, the only major hotel options in the town are the Cairndale and the Station Hotel. The Cairndale (pictured right), extensively redesigned, rebuilt and refurbished over the years, caters to busloads of German and Japanese tourists doing Scotland in three days. The Station Hotel, another impressively solid pile of granite, offers big rooms and a quiet bar.
