  • Petra's remotest attraction is also one of it's most famous. After a strenous ascent of about 45 minutes you'll reach the summit of el-Habis and you'll face the huge facade of the Monastery, also called ed-Deir. The building has a similar structure than the Treasury but it is even larger. It's urn, enthroning it's capital measures 9 metres alone!

    The best conditions for taking photos is about 12 a.m., from the summit you have also an astonishing view westwards to the Wadi Araba.

    Directions: Turn to your right at Petra's archeological museum and follow the foothpath uphill.

    If you are not in good condition you may rent an expensive donkey (see my tourist traps section), because the ascent takes about 45 minutes and it is strenous....
