"Eileen Donan Castle" Scotland Things to Do Tip by frank_delargy
Scotland Things to Do: 1,337 reviews and 2,738 photos
Situated just before the newish bridge to Skye, a view of the most recognizable Scottish castle graces the roadside. You can easily park, walk across the lovely bridge to the castle, walk around the castle exterior, take pictures galore, all for no cost if the visitor centre is closed. If the visitor centre is open, it costs about $3.75 to get to walk out to and enjoy the interior of the castle.
Pictures from the parking lot are still free :-)

The current castle was rebuilt from the ruins of more ancient castles. Actually, as old buildings go, the current reincarnation is quite new, about 70 to 90 years old. The old castle was actually attacked by Government warships in 1719 and left in ruins and it wasn't until 1912 that the new building grew out of the old.
The picture shows a wedding that happened while we were visiting the castle. It was the same wedding party that we saw when we were in Plockton!
One of the favorite photos that I ever took of this castle is on my Scotland Intro page.
