Solomon Islands Warnings and Dangers: 5 reviews and 0 photos

Malaria is rife in the Solomon Islands. At the time of my visit, there was no hotter place in the world for the disease than here. I met numerous locals during my stay who were suffering from it, and they didn't seem to think much of it. They treated it just like the common cold. It comes; it goes. Of course, you should NOT have this attitude. Untreated, malaria can be deadly and at the least can spoil your trip or put you out of commission for a few days.

Be sure to see a travel doctor before you visit; they will probably give you a prescription for malaria pills (e.g. Lariam or Malarone) to help slow down the effects of the disease should you contract it. The pills are NOT a vaccine and you should still wear long trousers at night or at least cover your body with insect repellent of some sort.
