While the courtyard is dominated by an open great stairway, sumptuously decorated, the boldly designed outer facades are delightfully reflected in the river. When at the end of the 18th century, the Marquis of Biencourt purchased Azay, they wished to make it the "diamond with finely cut facets set into the Indre" later mentioned by Balsac.

From being a bold castle, a refined fortress defensively girt about by the Indre,as it was in the time of the Berthelos, the Biencourts turned it into an object of contemplation, surrounded by a leafy romantic park, a marvellous chateau of timeless dreams.
