The Horse Guards Parade was once the only entrance to Buckingham Palace and remains its official entrance. It is the largest open space in London. Henry VIII once used it as a tournament ground and played tennis nearby. The buildings were completed in 1755 to house the old palace guards. Horse Guards Parade is named after the troops who guard the life of the kings and queens since the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
