Extra Billy's: "Barbecue, anyone?" Top 5 Page for this destination Extra Billy's Tip by b1bob

Why is this restaurant called Extra Billy's? "Extra Billy," by which William Smith was known to everyone North and South, was a result of questionable perks he had gotten as a mail contractor in Andrew Jackson's administration in the 1830s. He had owned the contract for a daily postal route between Washington, D.C. and Milledgeville, then capitol of Georgia. Smith had extended it to numerous spur routes, for which he received extra payments. When Postmaster General William T. Barry came under political attack for increasing payments to contractors, Smith's "extras" were uncovered, and his nickname was born. He was governor of Virginia at the fall of Richmond and was arrested by the invading Yankees. In an effort to make it up to Matt and Urszula for the lacklustre tomato-based minced pork barbecue at Dunn's on their first day, I suggested we get some real barbecue for their last supper on American soil this trip. My friend Dustin suggested Extra Billy's. The restaurant was well-appointed with decor; the service was friendly and prompt.
Favorite Dish: We all had the pulled pork barbecue platter. It comes with two sides. Mine had fries and baked beans; they opted for baked potato and baked beans. Extra Billy's was, on the whole, as lacklustre as Dunn's, but in different ways. The major complaint I have with Extra Billy's is that they serve their hush puppies (fried balls of cornbread) as appetisers, not as side dishes, to extract extra money from customers in the tradition of "Extra Billy" no doubt. Barbecue, as I understand it, should be eaten WITH hush puppies, not as an afterthought. Ideally, a good barbecue doesn't need sauce to help it along, however the in-house sauce gave it the extra flavour it needed. The barbecue is better than Dunn's, but by no means the best pulled pork I've ever had.
