In a city where Mexican restaurants are distant interpretations of the real thing, where the largest group of Spanish speaking residents are the vacationing students in the English language colleges, it's nice to know that delicious and authentic Latin American cuisine is available if you know where to look.
Banano's Cafe is located in Yaletown.
Don't go away.
Unlike the majority of high end trendy bistros in Yaletown, Banano's is a small but inviting cafe run by a cheerful Venezuelan woman. She has decorated the small cafe with artwork and photos of her home country. On the bookshelves are travel books and photography books of Venezuela that you're encouraged to flip through while you wait for your food.
Favorite Dish: Banano's serves food of Venezuelan and Colombian origin. I don't think there's any other such restaurant in Vancouver.
The food at Banano's is some of the freshest and tastiest I've had of its kind. There's a set menu with such classics as enchiladas and tacos, but there's also a blackboard inside advertizing the daily special. When you're served the food, you're explained what it is and how you're supposed to eat it.
I ordered a special Venezuelan dish called "pabellon Criollo" for $10.95 which had rice, beans, and cooked shredded beef and spicy homemade chili sauce along with a homemade thick and pasty flour patty that you use to eat the beef, rice and beans with. With the food came fried plantanes which I still crave to this day.
Some people find that the meat at Banano's, while tasty, is not very spicy. If you like lots of spice with your South American cuisine, you'll have to ask. If you like your meat mild, then you'll enjoy it as is.
There is also a cooler inside Banano's full of imported Venezuelan and Colombian drinks, such as fresh tropical juices and assorted soft drinks. They even have Venezuelan desserts if you have room!
I will definitely recommend Banano's to anyone looking for good Latin American cuisine. It's hard to find in Vancouver due to its small Latino population, but I think I've finally found it!
