  unfinished Obelisk, Aswan
by Myndo

In the quarries of Aswan - where a lot of the material that the temples along the Nile are built of come from- still lies an Obelisk.

Obelisks are the high stone columns with the small pyramids on the top. They are often used as Monuments. The Hieroglyphs on it remind of important events.

The one is Aswan would have been the biggest one (43 m), unfortunately it broke when it was 3/4 finished.
Sometimes I wonder how they felt when they came there one morning and saw this ...

The stone it is made of is thick grained pink granite and quite hard. They worked with a harder stone (Durit) and the force of water to get the large stones out of the quarrel.

If you are there, have a look at the old funeral ground opposite the street. It is a classical arabican one with small buildings, some of them are really old.

Directions: The Northern Quarry is situated near the Fatimid Cemetery at the southern end of Aswan, easily reached by taxi, or a walk up the hill from the Basma Hotel.
