"Church on Spilled Blood" Cathedrals and Churches Tip by travelingdanna

Cathedrals and Churches, Saint Petersburg: 275 reviews and 565 photos

This church was built in St. Petersburg in the late 19th century over the spot where Alexander II was assinated. It was built in a style which tried to imitate the old Russian Orthodox style of architecture - in many ways, it does not seem to belong in otherwise "European" St. Petersburg. A lot of people think that the design is ridiculously flamboyant, and the church attracts tourists more than anything else. But a visit to the inside is a must; the entire interior is covered in colorful mosaics and marble carvings. It is hard to believe, but the inside is even more ornate than the outside. It is impressive every time.

Directions: it's hard to miss, you see it from Nevsky Prospekt. walk up Kanal Griboyedova...
