  Melrose Abbey
by Niekie

Melrose Abbey is one of the great abbeys that were built in the 12th century by king David I in order to strengthen his hold on the Borders. Although ruined by the English in the wars of independence, it still makes a magnificent site.

The abbey belonged to the Cistercian order, and by diligent labor the monks made Melrose into a devout religious, but also bustling economic centre. Selling wool and hides to Flanders, the abbey grew prosperous, and with its wealth came architectural beauty. Now, hundreds of years later, one can still be amazed by the beauty and detail of the delicately sculptured windows and arches that once made up this much loved abbey.

Do take the audiotour, it’s great!
