Favorite thing: The classic period was from about 250 - 900 AD. During this time they made great advances in science, technology, social structure, architecture, arts and astronomy.

Villages developed in to big cities, with big plazas, temples, pyramids and ballcourts. They made amazing accurate astronomical discoveries. Many of them were not discovered untill hundreds of years later in Europe. They also had two different calendars that were more accurate than the gregorian one. Together they made a 52 year cycle, and dates can be calculated for millions of years in the past or the future. They also had their own zodiac with 13 houses and constellations.

The mathematicians constructed a numerical system using only three different symbols; a dot meaning one, a bar meaning five and a shell for zero. 800 years later the europeans also made a symbol for the zero.

The Mayas also had an extensive glyphic system. But the spanish destroyed most of their codices so much of it is still not deciphred today. They were also merchants and was trading everything from cacao and maize to arts and goods.

Their religion was very important to them. It explained everything from the creation of earth to the planting of the crops. They believed everything would repeat in cycles dictated by the gods, and they performed rituals to please the gods.
