The Chain Bridge was the first permanent structure built over the Danube. It connects Buda with Pest and it was built between 1839 and 1849 by Adam Clark of Scotland. It is 1250 ft (380 m) long. The Chain Bridge was a major architectural achievement of the time. The Nazis destroyed the original bridge during WWII, so it had to be rebuilt. The current structure opened in 1949.
