  Hobbit Holes in Matamata
by easyoar

Pretty much the only reason to go to Matamata as far as I could see was to see the Hobbit Holes that were used in the filming of the Lord of the Rings. You can only visit them on a tour (that you can purchase from the tourist office in Matamata). The holes themselves are in the middle of private land on a sheep farm (the Kiwis do love their sheep). Although I personally am not a big fan of the Lord of the Rings (my other half is) I did thoroughly enjoy the trip. The guides are knowledgable and humouress, and recount how close to destruction the holes nearly came.
