Burggarten is a landscaped garden located behind Neue Burg. After Napolean left Vienna, he tore down a city wall and exposed open space. The Habsburgs decided to leave it open and plant a garden. It opened to the public after their empire crumbled in 1918.

In addition to the garden, there are many statues located here, including this one of German poet, dramatist, novelist, and scientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) at one corner.
