"Trains" Vietnam Transportation Tip by MParent

Vietnam Transportation: 212 reviews and 180 photos

We took an overnight train from Hue to Hanoi. It took about 12 hours and was not as bad as I thought.

There are different classes of trains. We took the E2 and had a 4-person room that had 2 top bunks and two bottom bunks. We had 2 strangers sleeping in the room with us but they turned out to be very nice ladies. One was from Spain and spoke great English, the other was from Vietnam and didn't talk at all.

We heard from other travelers that the S-class trains are not as nice. More beds per room and sometimes no air conditioning.

Either type of train is pretty noisy and a very strange experience. Especially when you're pulling up to a stop and they blare this horrible music over the speaker and then they make announcements in Vietnamese for 30 minutes at at time! Luckily our train only stopped once during the night - we heard the S trains stop much more frequently.

The trains are, however, a cheap alternative to driving. You can use your sleeping time to travel, so you don't have to waste a day driving.
