Some 2000 pieces have already been restored, and archaeologists continue to work every day in the deep pits.
The rows of soldiers are all below the ground level, and it is only in the one or two places where the visitor can get down to their level (notably just by the stairs at the entrance to Pit #1) that you can get a real feel for the scale of the massed ranks.
I understand that if you are an archaeologist or anthropologist you can make arrangements a long way in advance with the authorities in Xi'an to get guided access inside the pits.
The whole complex now includes other exhibitions, including the famous and stunning bronze chariots, and information about local geology and geography.
It is an awesome experience, and I would recommend getting a good guide from Xi'an who really knows the place, but avoid the group tours that will rush it all.
Note that due to 'beautification' the complex is now a very long walk from the car park, which can be tiresome in the heat.
Pity the money is not spent on archaologists rather than landscaping and marble.
