Walpurgis, i.e. the last night of April, is not only the current king's birthday, but also when we celebrate the beginning of spring and kick winter out. In an oblong country like Sweden, this means that whilst Malmö might have decent weather, it is still winter in the highlands...This means nothing, as the entire population seem to throw off our coats and pretend spring has arrived even those years when it clearly hasn't :)))

Office people usually only work in the morning, and at the end of the day, we light a bonfire (apart from on the west coast where they only light fires for Easter), and sing songs. This is particularly nice if you are in Uppsala or Lund where student choirs sing. In fact, in all university cities you will find people wearing their characteristic white student caps from college graduation.

Another nice place to go to is Eksjö, where the local riding school acts out a battle between winter and spring. Always exciting even though you know who will win! :)
