Brownsberg is named afetr John Brown, a goldminer who operated in this area in 1810. The park was established in 1969 and is managed by STINASA, the Foundation for Nature Conservation in Suriname.

Brownsberg is fairly easily accessible from Paramaribo by car, lying 130km south, by a muddy dirt track, fairly steep in places.

Brownsberg is a paradise for naturelovers. Over 200 species of birds are found here, although they are more often heard rather than seen.

Covered by neotropical rainforest, Brownsberg is the northern outpost for several plant and animal species. Although we did not encounter all of these, deer, rabbits, squirrels, monkeys and sloths are found in this forest.

One of the most enjoyable activity to partake in during your visit to Brownsberg is trekking on the many well-marked paths.
