Marshall Field's acquired Franco Mints from a mom and pop Seattle confectionery in the late 1920s, and Chicago residents and visitors discovered this creamy chocolate delight at the Marshall Field's candy counter. Shopping at Field's and buying Franco Mints, as they were first named, became a part of the Marshall Field's and Chicago experience. In the mid 1930s, stories of the Spanish Civil War made news, General Franco was one of its prominent figures, Marshall Field's replaced the name "Franco" with the less political "Frango." The name remains to this day (frango coincidentally means "chicken" in Portuguese).

As time went on, Frango did other flavours like dark mint, double chocolate, toffee crunch, caramel, raspberry, malted, coffee and cherry chocolates. Frango aficionados found new ways to enjoy the candy in coffees, cookies, dessert toppings and more. Before long, they did mail order and this Chicago secret became known to the rest of the world.

As with most everything else, corporate pinheads can't resist taking a great thing and take away some of the lustre. When the Target folks bought out Marshall Field's, they decided to move the candymaking operation from State Street in Chicago to Pennsylvania. Chicagoans were rightly up in arms (That's like taking FFV cookies out of Richmond, folks.) that the Chicago institution (to say nothing of all the jobs) is off to Pennsylvania. At least they're not going to Mexico-- yet!

I personally had never heard of it until October, 2004, when at my first VT meeting, my good friend Kristi Dabs had me sample some. Normally, I'm not too keen on mint candies, but these were plumb good. I'm going to try some of the other flavours. Give me the raspberry, y'all!
