If you are staying both at Kuching or at Santubong, it is easy to get to Bako National Park - there are plenty of day trips available, even though I would suggest to stay there for at least 2 days.

This park is really amazing ... beautiful beaches surrounded by weird and rugged limestone rocks, forest and cliffs, mangroves, and of course plenty of jungle and wildlife! This is reputed to be the best place in Sarawak to observe the Proboscis Monkey - though this is not an easy feat - you must either hire a guide or else walk very quietly and observantly through the jungle and be very patient :) I managed to get a good look at a harem of them, under the watchful eye of an enormous and pendulum nosed male.

There are plenty of trails in this park (over 30 km of them in all) ranging through different level of lengths and difficulty. There is plenty of wildlife to be seen, including the entertaining Long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards, snakes and bearded pigs amongst those who are most commonly seen.

If you want there are chalet/hut style accomodations in the park, near the park headquarters. Sadly, I did not stay overnight at Bako but a night at one of these chalets looked pretty tempting.

Directions: If you go alone you can catch a bus from Kuching (Bus Num 6) and then charter a boat from Bako Bazaar.
