Harran is mentioned in the bible and it is said that Abraham lived here. Well, at least it has been inhabited for a very long time. It has been a place for worship of the moongod Sin, and a place for battle between the Romans and Phartians, and between Arabs and Byzantines.
In the village is the ruin of Ulu Cami. It was built in the 8th century and is said to be the oldest mosque in Anatolia. There are also ruins of a castle.
Well, Harran is s famous for it beehive houses (which I have also seen in Syria). They are made of mud and said to be cool in summer and warm in winter. In Harran there are two houses open for visitors.
Around Harran cotton is cultivated on the fields. This can be done because the irrigation from the Atatürk Dam. Before this was a very dry area.
I went to Harran together with a Japanese women in a taxi organised by Nemrut Tours in Sanliurfa and it costed me
14 000 000 TL. We left Sanliurfa at five in the evening, which is very good as it is too hot during the day in July. Arriving at Harran (old Harran) you pay 2 000 000 TL for entering. The taxi was going to wait for two hours which is time enough to see Harran. We very a bit in a hurry back though as we had been invited for tea with a family.
