"The Maritime Museum" Maritime Museum of British Columbia Tip by WulfstanTraveller

Victoria possesses a very good maritime museum that is housed in an old courthouse. It is worth visiting for the building itself, an attractive, historic structure complete with one of the oldest operating elevators in North America. It is an old cage elevator. It has numerous displays, artifacts, and a great many models of ships and boats, all covering the local maritime history of Britain and Canada in this region.

The courthouse was once known for its "hanging judge," who would supposedly threaten to hang the jury if they did not give a verdict he liked. The museum was established some years in Esquimalt before moving to this building.
