This former coalmine was once the largest in europe. It closed down in 1996 and afterwards its heritage was maintained when it was bought by the federal state of Northrhine Westfalia who turned it into a cultural centre and museum.
Its a big tourist attraction in the area with its guided tours of the mine (not below ground though).
