After spending a longer than planned time in Samui, I decided to catch a train back to Bangkok. I had to cancel my ticket a couple of time due to unexpected delays (100bht each cancel).
The train ride was similar in a lot of ways as my first trip, except with some of the problems. I paid 680bht for the second class express train from Surat Thani, with the lower bed. The total fee included the ferry ride across to the mainland. The total time of the trip back was about 15 hours.
As mentioned this trip went off without any problems and I feel it is a much better ride than the bus. At least you have the option to walk around and stretch, as well as lie down to sleep whenever you want.
The train drops you off at an inner Bangkok station, from which you can grab a number of taxis to your final destination.
