Our guide recommended this concert. It's a hefty RMB160 per person. It's supposed to be a showcase of Tibetan dance and song (and a slice of yak meat). It's definitely targeted at tourists (like us!). Half of our tour group went. The other half who did not go explained that it's no big deal cause every other tourist spots in china would offer some sort of dance-and-song concert, and after a while, they all seem alike.
Anyway, since I have never seen this sorta thing, I thought I would give it a try...
The concert was held at the newly-built (then) Sheraton. It was a decent concert hall where we were greeted by ushers draping us with white cloth (Tibetan custom).
Later, we found out that these same ushers would also be the performers.
The performance consisted of several sessions of tibetan singing (traditional songs and updated ones) which was ok. The dancing was colorful and entertaining cause they told of tibetan customs and tales.
At the end of the night, the dancers invited the guests to join them onstage for a dance.
This was when we found out that Chinese tourists are really into this sorta thing cause nearly the whole audience went onstage. It was very festive!
One thing though, these singers are tibetans, but the dancers are mostly not. We found out from a tibetan lady the next day that these are professional dancers who come here to host concerts like this for a living.
