The most peaceful place in town, Mirogoj is a beautiful cemetary surrounded by arcades where some of the most famous and prominent names of Croatian history found their peace. The parcel used to belong to a famous 19th century patriot Ljudevit Gaj, who donated it to the people of Zagreb at the turn of the century. Mirogoj is definitely the most fascinating cemetary in Zagreb and probably this part of Croatia as well.
Traditionally, on All Saints Day people remember those who passed away and go to visit their places of rest. The sight of thousands of alight candles after twilight is an overwhelming and deeply touching experience even to a non religious person like me... and my fondest memory of this place.
