View of Angkor Wat from atop Phnom Bakheng
by Rodan44

Phnom Bakheng is a Brahmanic temple dedicated to Shiva and built at the beginning of the 10th century by King Yacovarman I. It is an immense five level sandstone pyramid on top of a large hill that now overlooks Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat below. The top level once contained the standard five tower configuration (large one in middle with four smaller ones at each corner) but today only the center one remains. In addition, there are dozens of small sanctuaries around the various levels of the pyramid.

Because of the great views from atop this hill, Phnom Bakheng is most known as an evening convergence point for tourists to watch the sunset. The top of the hill can be reached via the crumbling original stairs on the east side of the hill, which is quite a strenuous climb, or by hiring an elephant to carry you up a winding path.

Directions: just south of Angkor Thom south gate, ~10km from Siem Reap
