Fly............okay, Australia is huge (as big as the USA and as large as Europe - Melbourne to Perth is as far as London to Moscow!!!)
You can fly into Melbourne via the US and NewZealand or via Europe/Singapore or Bangkok. You can also go domestically- all the capital cities are linked
Trams - most of the city is accessible by trams and they are a good economical way to travel....you get to see some of the great sights as well and experience the city on a human scale!
The city is the central hub for trams, the main streets that they travel along are N/S Elizabeth Street and Swanston Street and E/W Bourke Street and Flinders Street.
There are maps available from Flinders Street Station and Tourist Info near the Town Hall in the city (Swanston Street).
You can easily ask the drivers - they are usually friendly and will help you if you get lost.
Tickets are bought on the trams and can also be used on the buses and trains....you can get a daily ticket which is really good value or one that lasts for 2 hours (the ticketmachines only take coins). The City and inner suburbs are in Zone 1 so you only buy a ticket for the Zones you need to travel in.
Tickets are also on sale in newsagents and corner shops if you don't have a pocket full of change!!!
You validate the tickets for every trip you take and you can take as many journeys in the allotted time on the ticket you like!
