The original building was built in 1599 but burnt down in 1613. It was the venue of many of Shakespeare's theatrical works. It was replaced again, though that replacement was demolished again in 1642. In 1949 a bronze plaque was all that was found during excavation work. Now some 100 mteres from the original site the Globe was built again, including thatched roof and all, to form a good replica. In the summer months some of Shakespeare's plays are performed.
